My name is Shaun, and I live in the great Canadian prairies!
I work in the IT field and support our Canadian Indigenous peoples through my work. My hobbies
include sailing, playing video games, reading, retro computing and technology and web design.
My interest in sailing strems from my love for old Age of Sail ships and stories revolcing around
that era. Some of my favourite works include Master and Commander (both the book series and the movie
from 2003), Horatio Hornbower (I've seen the TV series but haven't read C.S. Foresters books yet),
To the Ends of the Earth and more recently The Terror. I've went sailing with my aunt and uncle before
but haven't had any formal sailing lessons yet. I plan to take sailing lessons this summer and begin
my sailing journey!
I love all kinds of video games, although nowadays as I grow older, my enjoyment
tends to skew towards older games it seems. I have a modest physical games collection, and actively
collect games from thrift stores, retro game shops and garage sales etc, paying particular
interest in PS1 titles. The PS1 is my favourite game console of all time, I can't express how much
time I spent as a kid playing it after getting it for Christmas back in the 90s. I also do a lot
of PC gaming nowadays, getting most of my titles from either GOG or Steam. I also own a Steam Deck
which has been a fantastic addition to my hardware collection. As for genres of games I enjoy,
my taste is actually extremely broad compared to others. As long as the game is fun, and made with
love, I will probably enjoy it. Even things I don't enjoy very much in real life like Sports I can
usually enjoy in video game form. I have a soft spot for RPG and adventure games though, they are
usually my favourite. My favourite game of all time is Final Fantasy IX, and I could honestly write
or talk about it for hours. I think I'll make a dedicated page on this site for it just because I
love it so much.
I'm not a super avid reader but if a book hooks me then I usually can't put it
down. Lately I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks, namely the Aubreyad books and the Battletech
novels. I want to get through the Lord of the Rings novels at some point, I've started Fellowship but
haven't finished it yet.
Retro computing is a passion and hobby of mine and has been since I had
my first PC as a kid. Our family originally had a Power Macintosh running OS7, since my Dad was a
big Apple fan from using Macs a lot at his workplace GB Graphics. Afterwards we moved on to a
Windows 98 PC and upgraded from there to XP and beyond. My first own personal PC was a Compaq Persario
desktop running Windows XP. Today I usually build and collect older systems and tinker around with
old software and devices. I've got a couple of old Power Macs and some beige PC towers from the 90s,
including the infamous 'never obsolete' eMachines tower. Alongside actual computers, I also have a
very fond spot for old web design and philosophy, which is probably obvious given I'm on Neocities.
I had a Geocities page back in the day, although I never learned any web design beyond the built
in web designer they offered. Didn't know any HTML or anything like that. Now that I'm on Neocities,
I want to learn HTML and improve my skills. (Assuming I'm not lazy about it that is...) The web
revival movemtn is great, and I fully support it. I feel like modern social media is rotting my brain,
and it's a breath of fresh air to return to the colourful and vibrant creativity of the old web through
Neocities!
